Why They Don’t Care What You Think

Why They Don’t Care What You Think

Have you ever met someone who is simply miserable? You know there’s a brilliant smile underneath that hateful glare. You care about this person’s happiness, really – you do! Or at the very least, no one wants to look at an angry scowl every day.

If you’re like me, when you meet people like this, you start trying to get them to smile more, to see the brighter side of life, and to take steps in the direction they say would make them happier.

But if, after all of your efforts, they always return to that original state of misery, helping can get frustrating. OK, maybe I’m the only one who has ever believed she had to power to instigate sustained inspiration. What can I say, I love my work!

With a clear vision for increasing community in my office building, I set out to inspire the person responsible for planning events, a woman named Sahara who always looked irritated.

My first inspiration strategy was complimenting her. “Do you know how wonderful you are?” I asked. “Your smile is magnificent – keep using it.”

“Really? Me?” she responded, beaming.

Protect Your Dreams

May 07, 2012

Most of us will occasionally find ourselves at a crossroads, without the information and clarity needed to press forward. In these times, it is only natural to reach out for guidance.

But when in such a vulnerable state, be careful who you allow power over your dreams.

For several years, I spoke solely on generational differences. When I decided to expand my topic, I had a hard time articulating my new message, content and value. For three years, I drove myself crazy trying to figure out what “it” was.

Finally, I decided to reach out to one of the most successful, inspirational speakers I know for some guidance.

She agreed to chat with me, and on our call, I shared a bit about where I was.

Rather than sharing ideas, focus or perhaps a touch of inspiration, she said, “I’m not sure if you need a speaker coach or a therapist.”

Gotta love honesty!

A Simple Strategy for Inspiring Anyone

Linda Cureton, the chief information officer for NASA, recently released her first book, The Leadership Muse. At the launch party last month, she honored me with the opportunity to deliver a keynote speech to nearly 200 adoring fans, supporters and influential leaders, and then to interview her on stage.

At the end of the interview, I invited the attendees to ask Linda their own questions. My favorite came from a gentleman named Kenneth, a colleague and friend of Linda’s. His question and her answer were deeply inspiring … and simple.
